Postgame thoughts from Mick Cronin, Sean Kilpatrick, and another Bearcat will be posted here.
How come you missed shots today (in jest)?
I was just playing within the flow of the game. Everybody was finding me early. On top of that I was getting open shots.
FT problems. Mick worried?
We have 7 AM free throws. There is no late night staying up, watching ESPN.
Is that the only thing you didn't like about today?
I still don't like the turnover look. 13 is a lot of turnovers, but at least we have more assists than turnovers.
You have to be alert off the ball because they can go backdoor. They can also creep up on you.
It was good. We know we are going to see Big East teams like that.
How is early playing time helping you?
It helped me out a lot. It was getting my confidence up.
How has it been adjusting?
It has been ups and downs. I am handling it pretty good right now.
What has been the hardest part of the adjustment?
Just being in the right spot on defense. The game is faster. It is faster than high school.
What did you do dealing with watching...not playing last year?
I just kept myself motivated. Even in the weight room, and I would work on my jump shot. And my strength.
Playing a lot of bench early good?
This season coach is always harping on playing 8-9 guys. I think it helps us gel.
Fortunately we have shot-blockers so when we did get beat we had them at the rim. Cheikh got us started with that, David kept it up. Kelvin helped them out.
I was happy with our A/TO was great.
As you guys know SK had a big night. Shot selection was excellent. His preparation every day for every game is as good as I have been around as a coach.
SK's preparation include heavy Scouting Report attention to detail?
Shaq Thomas needed to get 26 minutes today. He hadn't played as much as others. Jermaine and Jeremiah played last year. He is coming along good. It is a learning process for me coaching Titus, him, and Dave. My job is teaching them in practice, motivate them and get them dedicated. Then during the game you have to try to have a guy find his comfort zone.
How far away is he?
He needs to play a real team.
Eager to play better teams?
I'm not interested in how they do. I am interested in winning. Some people are probably wondering, 'How good are we?' I can tell you this. Not good enough. Nobody is.
Free Throw shooting
Beyond bad. It is all about commitment. I saw lack of concentation. I saw guys during FT practice this week, Coach Davis predicted this. It is not lack of talent. We don't have guys who don't know how to score.
At times he does things like block shots and you say Wow. He still is learning how to use his strength. Like a Dwight Howard kind of guy he is going to catch it deep and get fouled a lot. When Kelvin plays with intensity and focus he can help us. The challenge for him is to like Sean Kilpatrick, the guy that is always focused, always intense. When Kelvin Gaines does all that, and uses his body and physicality, it is something we need.
They were the more physical team on the block-outs today.
You gotta get in the fight. Get down and dirty and go get the ball. The diference is that Justin Jackson views himself as a rebounder. It is all about toughness and pursuit. Fortunately for us we have some wings that rebound. Cheikh is going to have to improve as the year goes on, especially the defensive rebounding.
