American Men’s Basketball All-Conference and All-Rookie Teams Announced
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The American Athletic Conference announced its annual men’s basketball awards to cap the 2015-16 season and kick off the American Men’s Basketball Championship in Orlando, Fla., March 10-13.
The All-Conference First Team includes student-athletes from five schools and is highlighted by two unanimous first team selections: SMU guard Nic Moore and Temple guard Quenton DeCosey.
Cincinnati guard Troy Caupain, Memphis forward Shaq Goodwin and Tulsa guard James Woodard joined Moore and DeCosey on the first team.
Moore received first team honors for the third consecutive season. The redshirt senior was a unanimous choice in 2014-15 and earned the same distinction this year after ranking Top-3 in the American Athletic Conference in five statistical categories. Moore is second in the league in scoring (16.1 ppg) and leads The American in assists (5.2 apg) and 3-point field goals made (2.6 per game). He led SMU to a 13-5 finish in conference play and a 25-5 overall record.
DeCosey led the Owls to the American regular season title and the top overall seed in the American Athletic Conference Championship. The senior ranked third in the conference in scoring (16.6 ppg) in league play and scored in double figures in 27 of 30 games for Temple this season.
Caupain leads all Bearcats, averaging 15.4 points with 5.9 assists since the start of February. He has handed out 53 assists with only nine turnovers during the stretch. Caupain finished the regular season ranked among conference leaders in assists (second at 5.1), assist-to-turnover ratio (fourth at 2.3) and free-throw percentage (fourth at .789) in league games.
Goodwin led The American in scoring with 17.2 points per game in conference games while ranking second in the league in blocks per game (1.8) in league games. The senior scored a conference-high 35 points earlier this season, the fifth highest single game mark in American Athletic Conference history, and averages 7.6 rebounds per game in conference play. Goodwin was a 2014 All-American Athletic Conference Second Team member.
A repeat selection to the first team, Woodard led Tulsa and ranked sixth in The American with 15.6 points per game in league play. He is fifth in the conference in free-throw percentage (.785) and ranked fourth highest in league games in 3-point field goals made (2.5).
The American Athletic Conference Second Team included UConn guard/forward Daniel Hamilton, Cincinnati forward Gary Clark, Houston forward Devonta Pollard, Memphis forward Dedric Lawson and Tulsa guard Shaquille Harrison. Harrison was named to the second team for the second consecutive year.
Honorable mention selections went to UConn’s Shonn Miller and Houston’s Damyean Dotson.
The conference also announced the five student-athletes named to the All-Rookie Team. Memphis’ Lawson, USF’s Jahmal McMurray and SMU’s Shake Milton were unanimous choices of the head coaches. They were joined by East Carolina guard/forward Kentrell Barkley and Houston guard Galen Robinson, Jr.
The awards were voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches. The conference's Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player, Sixth Man Award and Sportsmanship Award will be announced on Wednesday. The American Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year will be announced at a press conference on Thursday, March 10 at the Amway Center at 12:30 p.m. ET.
