Guys, I text a bit back and forth with the newest UC commit, Jeremiah Davenport, when he committed to UC yesterday. But I just got a chance to talk more with him a few minutes ago. Had a 20-minute phone call to be exact.
Without saying it, Davenport basically told me UC was the offer he's long wanted. From Moeller (OH), he told me he grew up a huge Bearcats fan. Davenport said his favorite players were Yancy Gates, Lance Stephenson and Sean Kilpatrick. And when he took his official visit to UC this past weekend, he told me he loved seeing how nice Fifth-Third Arena looks now. He also visited earlier this year, but Davenport said he's been impressed with how the facilities now look.
The relationship with coach John Brannen goes back a ways. Davenport explained that Brannen recruited him at NKU, then stopped when he went to Wright State and didn't reach out when Davenport got out of his LOI, because Wright was a fellow Horizon League school. But literally, the day after Brannen got to UC, he reached out to Davenport.
The only other school Davenport officially visited was Duquesne. I had heard he visited Virginia Tech, but that wasn't the case. In the end, Davenport said it was some mixed emotions in choosing the Bearcats. "For me to stay home, that’s a big deal for me," he told me, while adding this when I asked about him being the hometown guy: "I'm gonna remain focused on what I've gotta do, what I need to do, the goal I'm reaching for. It’s a kind of a yes and no."
Davenport is currently back at Hargrave to finish out the school year. That ends this week, so he'll be back in the Queen City on Thursday.
We also talked about Jarron Cumberland. Davenport said he'd love to play with him and has also heard his cousin, Jaevin Cumberland from Oakland (Mich.) likely transferring to UC if Jarron stays. Overall, I've been very impressed with Davenport. Tough-nosed kid who is quite versatile. Should be a good get, as he's also more developed having played a prep year at Hargrave.
Full story coming.
