Hey guys, I caught up with three-star DB Jermaine Mathews, to see how his recruitment is going. He's a bit busy, not surprising, but he'll be back at UC very soon.
Mathews was at Georgia Tech this past weekend. He told me it went well and was his first trip there. I didn't realize that was the first power five school to offer him. He's gotten to be pretty close with assistant coach Mike Daniels, who's from, played and later coached at Cincinnati. That relationship seems to be one of the main reasons the Jackets are in a good spot right now.
With UC, Mathews will be back on campus this weekend to watch spring practice. He was also on campus Jan. 15 for the Hometown Heroes junior day. He told me he feels like the Bearcats' staff is on him more than any other staff, though Boston College is a close second. And he really likes the idea of staying home and playing for his hometown team.
I was especially interested in who he's bonded with now on the staff. He and former assistant coach Perry Eliano were tight and I know Mathews was one of Eliano's top targets in the 2023 class. Now, it's assistant coach Colin Hitschler who's taken the reins, as well as Greg Scruggs. Sounds like it's not like the bond he had with Eliano, but Mathews likes both coaches.
Mathews also visited West Virginia in January for junior day and it sounds like the Mountaineers are at least a contender. He didn't get into a ton of specifics, but said he likes Morgantown, the facilities, and everything around the program and campus there.
After UC this weekend, Mathews will Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio State, Indiana and Northwestern over the next few weekends. So he's certainly still open to plenty of schools. But for now, UC sounds like a slight leader. If Eliano was still on staff, though, Mathews might have already committed to the Bearcats.
Full story coming.
