Guys, I talked last night with three-star OL Johnathan Slack, whom UC just offered last week. He tells me he has 17 offers now, also recently from Oregon, West Virginia, Marshall and Boston College.
Slack is a kid whom it sounds like the Bearcats are liking more and more. He goes to Martin Luther King (Mich.), the same high school as Ahmad Gardner. That connection is one that UC is definitely using and that seems to also be working. Slack told me he visited for a camp in June and talked to Gardner in-person. They've stayed in touch since. Slack plans to be at UC Oct. 16 for the game against UCF. That could especially be notable, depending on how that visit goes. Like plenty of others, Slack also likes that UC is headed to the Big 12. I'm not sure I've talked to a recruit since that announcement who hasn't mentioned that.
It's also a sign of UC's interest that assistant coach Ron Crook has taken over lead recruiting duties. The Bearcats and plenty of other schools hand off to position coaches when it's a recruit they really want. And so far. Slack said he's enjoyed their conversations and likes that Crook told him he could be an All-American like Gardner.
The only game visit Slack has taken thus far was Sept. 25 to Michigan State. I get the feeling the pull of close to home is strong. And Michigan hasn't shown a ton of interest yet. Cincinnati isn't too far, but it's not as close to Detroit as Michigan State.
Slack said he has no other set visits, but really wants to get to West Virginia, Kentucky and Oregon. WV is particularly the one that has him interested. So I'd imagine that will be the next trip.
Still quite early here, but the Bearcats are in a good spot. Good sign he's also visiting next weekend. Full story coming.
