Guys, I spoke earlier over Skype with German defensive tackle Joseph Darkwa. He's a kid Cincinnati offered last fall and is looking at for one of its final 2019 positions.
This isn't unfamiliar territory for UC, as it went into Germany last year to sign Lorenz Metz in the 2018 class. Darkwa works with Brandon Collier, who has become the name to know with European prospects, helping them get recruited in the US.
Darkwa is up to 11 offers, after Colorado offered earlier today. He said he's open, but it sounds like he's narrowed things down quite a bit. Rutgers got in early, so he officially visited there last month. But he has three more visits set, to schools that have offered: UCLA this weekend, Virginia next weekend and Georgia Tech Jan. 25.
What we're looking at is a very strong possibility that Darkwa visits UC Feb. 1, the weekend before signing day. And because that would be his final visit, it could be a good thing for whoever he visits. That date is still not set yet, which is why schools are till trying to get in here.
Darkwa doesn't know a ton about UC right now, but he said he did enjoy talking with assistant coach Brian Mason. He also doesn't know Metz well, but knows who he is and he likes that he'd have someone to talk with, who was familiar with Germany.
What does bode well for UC is that Darkwa seems to like the idea of playing and going to an urban school over a rural one. Four of the five mentioned, including UC, fit that bill. Rutgers isn't in a city, but a metro area. But with UVA, which is in a college town, he has two other players he knows through Collier who are committed there and will also be taking officials to UVA the same time as Darkwa.
So I'll be honest, it's hard to say he's leaning one way. I will say, and I told him, he'll be worn out by the time signing day gets here. He's traveling from Germany to the US three, possibly four weekends in a row for a few days, then flying back across the pond. That's a lot of travel, but he seems excited. The Rutgers trip was the first time he'd been in the U.S. So that's worth noting too.
Full story coming.
