Hey guys, I just got off the phone a few minutes ago with four-star signee Mario Eugenio. No cause for concern or anything here, just wanted to catch up with him and talk about his experience last week at the Army All-American game in San Antonio.
For those who didn't know, Eugenio was selected for the game. He also tested positive for COVID-19 on the first day there and missed the whole week. He literally arrived Monday (Jan. 3) morning at about 11 am, immediately took the test at the players hotel, got his gear, helmet, hung out with the players, lounged, went to the banquet the game threw for the players and staff, then at 11 pm, was told he tested positive. He was then forced to quarantine alone in his room all week. Eugenio said he couldn't leave, but got all the food and movies he wanted. Food was brought to his room. On Sunday morning, the day after the game, he was allowed to leave his room, then shortly after, went to the airport and flew home.
Just really unfortunate all around. Loved this quote from him: "I was gonna put Cincinnati on the map."
Eugenio did tell me that he talked with the staff throughout the ordeal and they talked him through it. It was usually with assistant coaches Greg Scruggs and Gino Guidugli. Eugenio really likes both coaches and said he loved how Scruggs was honest and not telling him he'd start from day one, that he had to earn it.
Eugenio arrives at UC June 1 and until then, said he'll be running track, while working out five days a week. So he feels like it'll be a relatively smooth transition.
Full story coming.
