Guys, I just got off the phone a few minutes ago with Wadsworth (OH) three-star tight end Mitchell Evans. Since the first of February, he's gone from zero to 23 offers. But like a lot of other recruits, he's in a holding pattern with the pandemic.
Evans mentioned only three places he's visited: Cincinnati, West Virginia and Toledo. The Toledo visit was earlier this year and the offer, his first, came shortly after. It seems like the Mountaineers are widely thought of as the favorite because he visited there March 7. And he liked it, but he doesn't have a lot to compare it to. Evans did tell me, "I’ve been talking with schools more than West Virginia, but I still think it’s strongly invested in me. As of now, they’re my number one choice, even though they’re rebuilding. By the time I get there, they’ll be finishing up." But again, he doesn't have much to compare to.
Evans said he threw at one of UC's skills camps last summer. He played tight end last fall, but before that, was a quarterback, and so that's what he was for the camp. But Evans has grown three inches, to 6'7" since last year, making sense as a TE. Surprising though, he's going back to quarterback this fall. That's the biggest reason I think for him just now seeing his recruitment take off.
So UC was wise to get him on campus early. And assistant coach Mike Denbrock has been the primary guy here. Sounds like Evans really likes him. Evans was also impressed how he was able to talk to coach Luke Fickell almost right after he got the offer from the Bearcats yesterday. Evans liked how he also spoke with UC's strength coaches.
He also knows Evan Prater well, from going to the camp last summer. He said they've stayed in touch since then. But Evans said he just loved the campus and how things are situated. "They’ve been in the back of my mind, wondering if they were interested in me. It was eye-opening because that’s an elite school, just cool," he said.
Long way to go here, but UC is in a great spot, along with West Virginia. Georgia Tech and Louisville also got mentioned a few times, so others in it here, but I like where UC is right now.
Full story coming.
