Guys, I talked a little bit earlier with one of the Bearcats' long top targets for 2022, Canal Winchester (OH) running back Stephan Byrd. What's funny is Byrd had an offer in October, but didn't realize it until December. But he's been a top guy long before that.
Byrd told me he has 13 offers, most recently from Tennessee and Michigan State, so his profile is really growing. He doesn't want to put out any top list or favorites right now. But when I asked Byrd who was recruiting him hardest, he said UC and Michigan.
It's hard to know just how hard the Bearcats are still going after Byrd. He was one of former assistant coach Doug Phillips' top guys he was going after. But in the time since. Byrd said he has talked with coach Luke Fickell and assistant coach Mike Brown, though he forgot Brown's name and just told me, "the wide receivers coach." But overall, Byrd said he's still very much interested because "They’ve turned the whole program around the last couple of years."
Still very early here, but it sounds like the co-favorites right now are Michigan and Michigan State. Byrd likes the new Spartans staff and said he also liked with Michigan, that he was offered by coach John Harbaugh personally.
I think Cincinnati easily was the front-runner here before Phillips left. If the Bearcats really want Byrd, they'll have to step it up. But I also think Dan Enos has his eye on others now, too.
Full story coming.
