Guys, I hadn't talked with three-star DE Zequi Lawton in a while, so wanted an update. He's always so easy to talk to and was again this time.

In May, Lawton released a top five of UC, West Virginia, Illinois, Boise State and Oregon. He told me that's still the case, but I can tell there's movement. First off, he hasn't been able to visit anywhere in months, so I think you can rule out the west coast schools. It'll be somewhere that he can get to and see.

I asked what he's been doing and he told me "building relationships with coaches." When I followed-up with which ones have stood out or who has it been best with, the first name that popped up was assistant coach Greg Scruggs with the Bearcats. He talked quite in-depth about Scruggs and how Scruggs talks to his mom, how Lawton's mom likes him and how they talk about more than football. He mentioned how he sees Scruggs as a mentor and someone he could really thrive under. That, coupled with him saying he feels like he's getting closer to a decision is why I've put in my FutureCast for UC. So, we'll see if I'm right, but I get that feeling. I had a slight one before, but it was more definitive this time.

He didn't talk about West Virginia at all, so I think they're down too. He did talk a bit about Illinois and assistant coach Jimmy Lindsey. And I think that relationship is strong. But the new school that's made movement is NC State. Lawton talked about a long-standing relationship he has with assistant coach Tony Gibson, who used to be at West Virginia.

He didn't give me a definitive date, but he kept saying "I feel like I'm getting close." I don't think it's a lock for UC, but I think the Bearcats are the leader.

Full story coming.
