Guys, I talked a little earlier with one of UC's more priority targets for 2021, South Charleston (WV) LB/DE hybrid Zeiqui Lawton. He's up to 11 offers now and really gaining a lot of recruiting traction with a handful of schools.
Right off, I mentioned in another thread, but I'll reiterate here, Lawton told me UC is in a top three with Oregon and Illinois. Oregon is the one he's really intrigued with, though I'm not sold he'd be comfortable being out on the west coast, that far from home. His conversations have increased and continue to do so.
With UC, he has visited, last fall for the UCF game. That's huge, given the current climate, that he saw campus for arguably the biggest game and biggest win in recent memory. And it sounds like, even though he got there late, he really liked what he saw on the visit. Assistant coach Greg Scruggs has been the main coach here, but I know Marcus Freeman has also lended a hand.
I do worry about Illinois also, after talking with Lawton. He talked more about the Illini than the other two. Has a connection with an assistant, but also really loves coach Lovie Smith's pedigree. He really thinks Smith can get him to the NFL, since he was a head coach for so long in the NFL, including with the Bears and the Buccaneers.
Nothing imminent here, as he wants to see all three schools again. And this isn't a final three, so others could come in and change things, too. But right now, UC sitting comfortably in this group of three.
Full story coming.
