Guys, official yesterday if you missed it. I've already profiled these guys and written about them, but all three sent in their letters of intent, so they're officially Bearcats. The release from UC is below their profiles.
University of Cincinnati men’s basketball head coach John Brannen announced Wednesday the signing of three players for next season. Mike Saunders Jr., as well as twin brothers Gabe and Mason Madsen have signed national letters of intent to attend UC and play basketball for the Bearcats beginning with the 2020-21 campaign.
Saunders, a 6-foot, 175-pound point guard from Indianapolis, Ind., currently attends Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah. He averaged 11.8 points, 4.3 assists and 2.0 steals while helping lead the squad to a 26-4 record and the program’s first Top 25 national ranking a year ago.
The speedy guard previously played two seasons at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Ind., where his team compiled a 35-17 record during his career. He averaged 10.2 points and 5.0 assists as a sophomore in 2017-18.
“Mike is the fastest guard out there. He’s one of the fastest point guards in the country,” Brannen said. “He’s a guy that really brings not only a dynamic style of play but a real understanding of how to make people better. He’s a pass-first point guard with ability to score. He plays on an unbelievable team at Wasatch Academy that plays a national schedule. He’s a guy that can come in right away and really impact our program.”
Saunders also participated in the Stephen Curry SC30 Select Camp in August 2019.
Gabe and Mason Madsen currently attend Mayo Senior High School in Rochester, Minn., where the long-range shooters earned Post Bulletin All-Area accolades.
Gabe Madsen, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound guard, averaged 23.9 points, 10.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists while making 82 3-pointers as a junior last season
“Gabe is a dynamic scorer, a big-time shot maker who brings a swagger to the game,” Brannen said.
Mason Madsen, a 6-3, 190-pound guard, averaged 22.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists while making 100 3-pointers a year ago.
“Mason brings a toughness and a competitiveness that Cincinnati Basketball has been synonymous with for years,” Brannen said. “He’ll fit perfectly into how we do things. He’s selfless, he’s athletic. He can do a lot of different things with the basketball as a multi-position guard.”
The Madsen twins are three-star prospects according to Rivals.com.
“These three young men exemplify character first, the families they come from, the men that they are will represent this university and this brand of Cincinnati basketball at the highest level,” Brannen said. “They are also really good basketball players who fill tremendous needs for us in terms of style of play, how we want to play. Toughness is a strong, strong piece of their character as well. I can’t wait for them to get to campus.”
