Guys, I caught up just a few minutes ago with one of the Bearcats' latest offers, 2019 Sidney (OH) athlete Andre Gordon. Cincinnati offered him Monday as a quarterback.

The biggest thing with Gordon is he's not even sure which sport he wants to play in college. For football, Gordon has offers from UC, Iowa State, Syracuse and Toledo. Basketball is much lower offers, but they're from Toledo, Grand Canton, Wright State and Cleveland State, all as a point guard. Syracuse is as an athlete, other football offers are for quarterback.

As far as UC goes, Gordon said he visited for the UCF game and the SMU game. He mentioned the close proximity to where he's from and that he liked the atmosphere. Assistant coach Doug Phillips made the offer and Gordon said he appreciated that Phillips told him he wanted to be as close to Gordon as he and his dad are. Also, Gordon liked that Phillips told him they want him to come in for quarterback, but that he can play wide receiver if he wanted to.

I did ask Gordon about Toledo, since that's the one school to offer him for both sports. He said he hasn't looked into the Rockets a ton, but likes how they use their quarterback, including the success this past fall. Cincinnati's football staff has also told Gordon there's a possibility he could play both sports at UC, but he hasn't talked to the basketball staff.

No visits planned right now, since Gordon is in the middle of basketball season. Full story coming.

FB Recruiting ***INsider: Mickens Already Working On Recruit***

Guys, I know it's still very new news about Mike Mickens joining the Cincinnati staff as cornerbacks coach. But he's already going to work for the Bearcats in recruiting, including with Wayne (OH) three-star cornerback Justin Harris.

As you guys might remember, Mickens went to Wayne, so there's a connection. Harris said he's known Mickens since he was 6 or 7 years old. Harris said it does help with the background he has with Mickens and that the coach knows where he comes from. But Harris also told me, "It doesn’t have a whole lot of impact, but you’re more familiar and comfortable."

That said, it still sounds like UC is the favorite. Harris went to two Bearcats games last fall, for the UCF and Tulane games. So he's been interested for a while. Harris told me, "I’m sold on 'em because Coach Fickell came from being with Urban Meyer at Ohio State. I think it’ll be home for me because I love the atmosphere."

Most important, Harris will be back at UC on Monday for junior day. So he'll see the Bearcats for a third time before he sees anyone else, which is significant. I think Harris wants to be around Mickens more, which makes sense, and the staff. I'll try to touch base with him Monday after the visit to see how it went.

Harris has six total offers so far. Cincinnati was first, after Kentucky. In order of the offer coming, Harris said it was Toledo, Indiana, Iowa State and Bowling Green. Junior days are set for Toledo Jan. 27 and Indiana later this spring, though Harris couldn't remember the date.

Full story coming.

Football Mike Mickens Back at UC As Assistant

Guys, I've confirmed reports elsewhere that former Cincinnati cornerback Mike Mickens is back on the Bearcats' staff as the defensive backs coach. He replaces Willie Martinez, who left last month for Central Florida.

"Definitely glad to be home!" Mickens messaged me earlier.

We were also joking about how he can get Skyline Chili anytime now.

"Yes indeed! That's a must have!" he messaged me. Overall, though, Mickens said he's thrilled to be back in the Queen City and is still "getting situated" with the move.

Nothing official yet, as Mickens said he's waiting to have everything cleared with UC's human relations. But that's just a formality at this point.

FB Recruiting ***INsider: Daraun McKinneyLatest***

Guys, I spoke just a little while ago with River Rouge (Mich.) 2019 three-star cornerback Daraun McKinney. Last we heard was when our buddy Josh Helmholdt spoke with him back in October, shortly after UC offered. Indiana offered around the same time and Northern Illinois came later in the fall.

McKinney said he still has not been to UC, but said "It's definitely one I'm looking into." Assistant coach Willie Martinez was the primary recruiter until he left for UCF. McKinney said he's heard from coach Luke Fickell himself since then and hears from the support staff almost daily. So it's tough for McKinney to get a good vibe again until he gets to UC and/or Paul Haynes gets in with him. But Haynes is also evaluating to make sure he wants him. But the Bearcats are for sure trying to get McKinney down for a junior day, to get he and Haynes together.

Indiana is also in a decent spot and should get a junior day visit soon. But the one junior day McKinney has set is Jan. 15 to Eastern Michigan. So he's keeping an open mind, with schools like in the MAC.

No other visits set right now, but expect him to get to Cincy over the next month or so. Full story coming.

Hoops Cronin on AAC Teleconference: 1.8

Guys, I just hopped off of the AAC's weekly teleconference, to talk with coach Mick Cronin. Not a lot of time allotted, so nothing really earth-shattering. But did say he's not really surprised by anything and had a ton of high praise (as you would expect) about Gary Clark.

Full audio and transcript to come. I'll link it on this thread, but happy to answer any questions you have as well.

Hoops Clark Candidate For Post-Season Award

From Cincinnati athletics:

University of Cincinnati senior forward Gary Clark (Clayton, N.C./Clayton High School) has been named as one of 30 candidates for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award, an honor given annually to a men’s basketball student-athlete who excels both on and off the court.

It marks the second consecutive season a Bearcats player has been recognized as former UC guard Troy Caupain was named a candidate for the 2016-17 award.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

A positive example and strong representative for his team, university and the city of Cincinnati, Clark is an active volunteer who has logged more than 50 hours of service in the Cincinnati community leading his teammates to spend time at such places as Our Daily Bread, the Sheakley Boys and Girls Club and the Friar’s Club. There he spends time with area youth encouraging them to follow rules and stay in school.

Clark also participates in campus orientation efforts during the fall to help new students grow comfortable with their surroundings and recently visited a hospitalized patient to offer words of encouragement.

UC head coach Mick Cronin said recently, “He’s one of the greatest kids you will ever coach. I can only hope that the good Lord thinks I’m half as nice a human as Gary Clark because he’s a really good person.”

An academic honor roll recipient on pace to earn his criminal justice degree this spring, Clark earned UC’s prestigious Legion of Excellence Award in 2016 for owning the highest cumulative grade-point average on the men’s basketball team. During the summer 2016, Clark interned directly with Dr. Robin Engel, who serves as UC’s Vice President of Safety and Reform, working to positively impact campus safety.

On the court, Clark has earned the reputation as a dominate post player. Listed among the nation’s most elite players on watch lists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the Lute Olson Player of the Year Award and the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award, Clark ranks third in the nation among active players in career rebounds and is on pace to become only the fifth player in the history of Cincinnati basketball to record more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. He should finish his career as the school’s all-time leader in career starts while ranking in the Top 5 for career rebounds and blocks.

// ABOUT THE AWARD

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The group of 30 candidates will be narrowed to a field of 10 finalists in February. Those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men’s Final Four

Hoops Recruiting ***INsider: UC 2018 Target***

Guys, I just got some info on the Bearcats' newest offer for the 2018 class, three-star forward Frankie Policelli. UC offered Policelli, No. 146 in the Rivals150, on Friday night.

Policelli has heard most recently from Cincinnati, Texas Tech and Dayton, which have all recently offered. Dayton also offered Friday, following Policelli's game in the Beach Ball Classic.

Policelli said he spoke today with assistant coach Darren Sevino. Policelli said they talked about how UC needs shooters and how hard the team practices. The Bearcats really like how Policelli has developed, even since the fall.

As far as Cincinnati overall goes, Policelli said he likes the conference UC plays in and how they play "gritty, hard defense." He said he also really likes Sevino and the type of coach he is.

Policelli also spoke with Texas Tech today and he said the staff texts him almost every day. They first started recruiting him a few weeks ago. Cincinnati, TT and Boston College are the schools Policelli said are recruiting him hardest. Butler has also sporadically been in touch, but like BC, has not offered.

Still early here. Policelli said he's fielding calls from coaches and staying in touch, but does not plan to take any visits until after his senior season, so look for March to be a big month. Also important to note, he's only 17, with his 18th birthday April 11. I think UC and TT are the two out in front, but it's still early. Still, expect the Bearcats to go hard at Policelli. They love his upside and how his skillset fits with what they do.

Full story coming.

Hoops Cumberland Earns Weekly Honor

Good, noteworthy award for Jarron Cumberland. The release this morning from UC:

University of Cincinnati guard Jarron Cumberland (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington High School) was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Tuesday.

The sophomore scored a team-high 15 points in Cincinnati’s 82-48 victory against Memphis in the league opener Sunday at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights, Ky. Cumberland made 6 of 9 field goals with a pair of three-pointers to go with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in 29 minutes against the Tigers.

Cumberland is averaging 11.0 points this season, third-most on the team, with 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He has scored in double figures in seven of UC’s last nine games in his first season as a starter.

Entering January, Cumberland ranks among the league leaders in three-point shooting percentage (15th at .377) and three-pointers made (tied for 14th at 1.6).

This marks the second time this season Cumberland has collected weekly honor roll accolades. He first received the recognition on Nov. 20 after leading the Bearcats in scoring in wins over Western Carolina (Nov. 13) and Coppin State (Nov. 16). Against WCU, Cumberland netted a season-high 20 points with four three-pointers before producing 19 points with four threes a few days later against Coppin State.

A member of The American’s All-Rookie Team last season, Cumberland also earned AAC Co-Sixth Man of the Year accolades while averaging 8.3 points in 19.1 minutes off the bench.

FB Recruiting ***INsider: 2018 target Jayden McDonald***

Guys, I just got off the phone with one of UC's remaining 2018 targets, North Gwinnett (Ga.) linebacker Jayden McDonald. He's been committed to Rutgers since June, but did not sign last week during the first signing period.

I asked McDonald where he stands with Rutgers and he told me he's still committed. He added, "Nothing's changed. We’re still good, I feel like." But McDonald didn't sign because he told me, "I just wasn’t ready to sign at that moment."

Cincinnati has been on him for at least a few weeks now. Assistant coach Al Washington and defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman were both in to see him earlier this month during the evaluation period. McDonald said he's enjoyed talking to both, but the majority of what they've talked about is how they both want to get him to UC for a visit and talking up the campus and program.

The two to really watch for here are Ole Miss and Kansas State. McDonald has an official visit to Kansas State set for Jan. 19 and Jan. 27 at Ole Miss. He told me he also will definitely visit Rutgers, but doesn't know when. Honestly, I dont think that one will happen. I know he's 'committed' but I don't get the vibe that he wants to end up in New Jersey.

As far as the Bearcats, if they can get him to visit, there might be a legit chance. But right now, it's 50/50 if that will happen. I think the two schools he'll visit are in the lead, but UC is working on trying to at least get him up. Again, if that happens, the Bearcats have a chance, but it looks slim right now.
