Jowon Briggs waived by Cleveland Browns

Moments ago it was reported by Aaron Wilson of KRPC that Cleveland has waived seventh round draft pick Jowon Briggs.

Briggs had a decent showing this preseason for the Browns but this is a situation to keep an eye on as Cleveland could lock up Briggs to the practice squad or does another team come calling?

Worth noting that Cincinnati GM Mike Brown went above and beyond to introduce himself to Briggs following his pro day last spring that took place at Cincinnati's IPF downtown.

Now am I am saying, there potential for Briggs to play in Cincinnati? Im not 100% sure but it's safe to say some team will more than likely pick up Briggs to a practice squad deal of some sort.

Bearcats new pitching coach

Per GoBearcats release:

University of Cincinnati baseball head coach Jordan Bischel announced Wednesday that Tayler Sheriff has been promoted to serve as the team's pitching coach. He was previously the director of pitching development, a position he held since joining the program in August 2023.

During Sheriff's first season with the Bearcats in 2024, the team posted a 32-25 overall record and a 17-13 mark in conference play, the program’s first 30-win season since 2019. UC finished the regular season in fifth place in the Big 12 after being picked to finish in last in the preseason coaches poll.

Working with the pitching staff, Sheriff helped mentor freshman right-hander Nathan Taylor to an All-Big 12 campaign. Taylor was named to the league’s all-freshman team and was an honorable mention all-conference selection.

In addition to Taylor, Sheriff helped two-way player Christian Mitchelle to a Second-Team All-Big 12 accolade. Mitchelle appeared in 22 games on the mound and totaled six saves, while throwing 39.1 innings for the Bearcats.

Cincinnati also saw its team ERA drop by nearly a full run in 2024 from the previous season, and it posted its lowest single-season ERA since 2019.

Sheriff came to UC from Western Illinois where he served as interim head coach of the baseball program for the 2023 season. He was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2022 season, which was his first with the program.

Prior to joining Western Illinois, Sheriff spent three years working for the baseball program at Spalding University as a pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. He oversaw seven pitchers who were named All-SLIAC from 2019-21.
