Football 2008 FB team to be recognized at Pitt Sept. 7

Per GoBearcats:

Cincinnati Football will recognize the 2008 Bearcats team on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Pitt at Nippert Stadium.

The 2008 campaign featured the first UC victory over Pittsburgh.

The 28-21 home win over the 20th-ranked Panthers on Nov. 22, 2008, helped propel the Bearcats to their first BIG EAST Championship and first-ever BCS Bowl appearance at the Orange Bowl, solidifying the “River City Rivalry” as a must-see matchup in the years that followed.

Cincinnati held a 21-7 third-quarter lead over Pitt in the contest thanks to three touchdown passes from Tony Pike to Marcus Barnett, Mardy Gilyard and Dominick Goodman. The Panthers cut the lead to 28-21 with 1:22 left, but the Bearcats held on for victory as the fans rushed the field.

Goodman’s touchdown catch was the 22nd of his career, which set the school record at the time.

Cincinnati’s receivers on the 2008 team were so prolific that Goodman, Gilyard and Armon Binns all matched or exceeded the previous school record for touchdown catches (21).

The 2008 team went on to face Virginia Tech in 75th Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 2009, in Miami, Fla. The team featured nine all-conference players and dozens of future NFL draft picks, including Gilyard, Pike, Jason and Travis Kelce, Connor Barwin, Kevin Huber, DeAngelo Smith, John Hughes, Derek Wolfe and Mike Mickens – among several other stars.

Welcome Nati Nation

Hi everyone,

I don't know if you people know about TFON, but now we are bringing our coverage to Rivals. A little about me, is I'm J.T. and I've been covering the Cats since 2014, starting with Fansided's Cincy on the Prowl, then I covered them with Bearcat Insider on Scout before 247 took over. In 2019, I started to cover the Cats strictly with TFON and today we are on Rivals. We plan on giving y'all great content and look forward to interacting with you guys on a daily basis.

Site Update: Thank You

Hey all, I was waiting until towards the end of the day to post this, but wanted to reach out and give y'all an update on the site. Today is my last day as editor of BearcatReport.com. I'll still be in the Rivals network, but at a site to be announced soon. I took over as editor in March of 2017 and it's been a great, nearly seven and a half years since. UC Athletics has seen a TON of change since then, from the rise of Luke Fickell and the football program, to the College Football Playoff, departure of Mick Cronin, bungling of John Brannen, rise of Wes Miller and of course, the move to the Big 12. There's a lot that you, as Bearcats faithful, should be proud of. Cincinnati has a ton of momentum right now, particularly on the basketball side, where the Bearcats are involved with a TON of big-time players. This is a team that will make some noise in the NCAA Tournament.

I want to thank each of you for your patronage, for being here for all my reporting and stories. As someone who has a ton of family in the Cincinnati area, I've been quite familiar with the Bearcats for sometime. My uncle was the principal at Ludlow High School for 20-plus years until he retired. I'm also a diehard Bengals and Reds fan and still avidly support both.

Some of you might have already seen his post, but JT Smith and the guys at The Front Office News will be manning this site beginning at midnight ET. I just spoke at length with JT and I encourage you to give them a shot. Some of you might already be aware of their coverage and they do some great work. They have a lot of enthusiasm and are looking forward to hitting the ground running once they take over for Rivals. My X handle won't change (@jasonstammsaid), so I hope you'll reach out if you have any questions, wanna share any stories or anything else. It's been a privilege getting to run this site and again, thank you for sticking with me!

Sincerely,

Jason

FB Recruiting Gabriel Lovorn Update

Guys, following up my INsider. But here's the full story on Lovorn. Ole Miss might be the one to watch the most, just because I'm not sure how bad they want him. My guess is a backup option. So he technically has an 'offer,' but not sure if it's committable or not. Tulane and Arkansas State also in good shape. We'll see if UC offers and gets him up for an OV this fall.

Football Weekend Practice Update

Rolling into week three of fall camp at Higher Ground. Release from UC:

The University of Cincinnati football team held its first scrimmage of fall practice on Saturday, running more than 130 plays over 2.5 hours at Nippert Stadium.

The live practice – the ninth so far – featured various situational plays and included special teams.

Second-year head coach Scott Satterfield was very pleased with the effort and execution by his team.

"This was the first time we really got to play a lot of football, and we had so many scenarios to spot the ball,” Satterfield said. “Today was fun for our guys to get out and play, and it's a chance for us to really evaluate every position. This was the scrimmage where you're really playing everybody and not holding it back. We held Corey Kiner back because we know what he can do, but we got a chance to watch the other four running backs. Every other position, we let the guys play. It'll be great film to evaluate. We went three hours today, so it was a long, tough scrimmage, but it was well-thought out and I thought our guys executed."

Transfer tight end Joe Royer dazzled throughout the scrimmage. The redshirt junior took a short pass and ran more than 50 yards for the practice’s first touchdown just a few plays into the practice. On the next series, he got a long pass from quarterback Brendan Sorsby to set up another touchdown catch for himself.

"It felt good,” Royer said. “They were dialing some things up for me and giving me a chance to make a play. It was kind of like high school again, feeling good and running around out there."

Royer is a Cincinnati native and Elder High School graduate. He played three seasons at Ohio State, but battled injuries. He appeared full healthy on Saturday and has emerged as a team leader during fall camp.

"Joe is a talented player,” Satterfield said. “He has great size as a big target for our quarterbacks with soft hands. He can block and do it all. We're really excited about him. When you think about it, he has so much ball ahead of him. He has not played that much. It was exciting to watch him have some fun today."

After giving up a couple of big plays early, including the touchdown catches by Royer, the defense adjusted and clamped on the offense throughout the second half of the scrimmage.

“The offense had the touchdowns early, and it would have been real easy for our defense to hang their heads,” Satterfield said. “I was proud of how they bounced back. We put them in tough situations at the end of the day down in the red zone, and I thought they did a good job at holding our offense out of the end zone and to field goals. That's what it's going to take.”

Junior cornerback Ormanie Arnold had a touchdown-saving pass breakup in the end zone, while linebackers Jared Bartlett and Brian Simms III made several plays in the back field.

Bartlett, a transfer from West Virginia, and Simms, a redshirt freshman, are expected to be key contributors in the linebacker unit for Cincinnati.

The duo is expected to be joined in the rotation by returning starter Jack Dingle and Central Arkansas transfer Jake Golday, who has flashed all camp with his athleticism, as well as returning redshirt sophomore Jonathan Thompson – among others.

"It felt great today,” Bartlett said. “I remember just walking into the locker room and thinking 'man, I missed this place so much.' Just getting back here with the team and on the field felt really good."

The Bearcats will take Sunday off before returning to Higher Ground Conference and Retreat Center for four more practices next week.

Guys, someone who doesn't have a UC offer yet but is absolutely worth monitoring is 2025 tight end Gabe Lovorn. He was invited by the UC staff to practice a couple of weeks ago (the first one).
Login to view embedded media Lovorn has some decent offers right now, like Tulane, Memphis and Marshall. He told me he has an Ole Miss offer, but I can't verify if that's a full offer, a partial or even a walk-on spot. But it's clear the Rebels' staff has stayed in touch and invited him on campus.

Lovorn was at UC July 31 for the first day of fall camp. He told me it was his first visit to Cincinnati and he liked the energy, the facilities and how everyone treated him. Lovorn told me he's talked mostly with assistant coach Cortney Braswell and thinks they have a good relationship so far. "He definitely has high energy and it seems like all the players love him and love being around him," Lovorn told me.

The school that seems to be in best here I think, is Tulane. The Wave have made a concerted push here and he visited there in late June. But then he told me he wasn't sure if he'd officially visit there or not. No dates set, but he said he's working on setting up officials to Ole Miss, Arkansas State and Marshall. Ole Miss is OBVIOUSLY the one to watch here. They're looking at him at tight end and linebacker, depending on how the rest of their class shakes out. It seems like most programs like Lovorn as a tight end, but a few are looking at him as a linebacker. He's kind of a tweener, which has hurt his stock and ranking. But those guys, underrated and undervalued, can sometimes be some of a program's best players.

It was good for UC to get him for the unofficial a few weeks ago. But not sure yet if the Bearcats will move further. He's on the radar and like Ole Miss, they seem to be evaluating how much of a run they want to make at Lovorn.

Full story coming.

Football Gavin Gerhardt Named to Rimington Watch List

Award to nation's top center. Here's the release from UC:

Redshirt senior offensive lineman Gavin Gerhardt was named to the Rimington Trophy preseason watch list on Friday.

The Rimington Trophy is annually presented to the most outstanding center in the nation.

Gerhardt was an all-conference performer last year and one of four team captains. He finished the year as the third-highest rated center in the Big 12 according to Pro Football Focus (73.4) and his run block grade of 79.7 was the best among Big 12 centers and sixth-best in the nation.

The Trophy committee worked with Pro Football Focus (PFF) this season to narrow down its list to the top 40 centers. PFF grades every player on every play of every game on how well they execute their given assignment. That play-by-play grading allowed the Trophy committee to create a watchlist based both on nominations from the schools and data provided by PFF.

// ABOUT THE RIMINGTON TROPHY

Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy's only two-time winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.
