Football UC Athletics on Today's Scrimmage

Hey all, here's the press release from UC on the Bearcats' scrimmage today. I'll do another 'What he said, what he meant' on Satterfield's post-scrimmage comments.

Led by a stout defensive performance and explosive offensive plays, the University of Cincinnati football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp inside Nippert Stadium on Saturday.

The Bearcats competed for more than 100 plays during a practice that featured 1s vs 1s, 2s vs 2s, 3s vs 3s and situational action.

"We wanted to make it game-like in this scrimmage,” head coach Scott Satterfield said. “It's been a tough grind with Higher Ground all week. To come out here, get 120 plays with heat and humidity, I thought it was great for our guys to fly around with great energy. It's a tough, physical camp, but we want to be that kind of football team; one that brings it every day and is tough, gritty and will never back down."

Senior star Deshawn Pace set the tone early with a big hit in the backfield on the opening drive of the scrimmage to force a three and out.

On the following drive, redshirt junior defensive end Justin Wodlty keep the momentum going with a strip sack.

Redshirt sophomore running back Myles Montgomery ignited the offense as he broke free for an 80-yard touchdown down the sideline for the first touchdown of the day.

Graduate transfer quarterback Emory Jones connected with redshirt junior Payton Singletary for a plus 25-yard gain to open the following drive. Jones would lead the team down field before scoring his first touchdown of the day on a 12-yard run.

Redshirt junior safety DJ Taylor nabbed the first interception of the day.

Redshirt sophomore Brady Lichtenberg would respond for the offense the following drive with a 12-yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper.

With the ball starting on the offense’s own 1-yard line during the situational portion of the scrimmage, Jones connected with redshirt senior transfer Braden Smith on a 50-yard pass. Jones had multiple double-digit yard throws throughout the scrimmage, but none bigger than that throw to Smith.

During the same situational section, true freshman quarterback Brady Drogosh showed his speed, breaking off a 99-yard touchdown run.

Later in the scrimmage, redshirt freshman safety Oliver Bridges came up big for the defense with an interception at the goal line to prevent a touchdown.

"(Dorian Jones) did a great job, and (Oliver Bridges) had a great one,” said Bryan Brown, associate head coach/defensive coordinator. “We did a good job at getting our hands on a lot of balls and had a lot of sacks. We want to get after the quarterback, and if you can get sacks with a three-man rush, that's awesome. We're pleased with where we are at right now, but we know we have to get better."

Junior running back Corey Kiner capped the scrimmage with perhaps the highlight of the day, breaking three tackles and barreling into the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown.

Hey all, I finally caught up with recent Bearcats commit Quinton Price, just to get to know him, find out about his commitment, etc.
Login to view embedded media Price said he didn't take part in, but was on campus the day of the elite camp, on July 27. Price said it was his idea to go to campus in-person and give the coaches his commitment in-person. I think the staff had a feeling it was coming, but didn't know he was going to commit until he arrived on campus that morning.

Price told me assistant coach Kerry Coombs might be the biggest reason for his commitment. He also was down to West Virginia, Kentucky and Purdue. But he loved how personal Coombs was and continues to be. Price told me Coombs "got me through the steps, told me the process."

Also, Price said Coombs talked about him playing multiple spots as a DB, but most likely nickel. He also wants to get to 210 this season, by the time he gets to UC, most likely next summer. Price said there's a chance he could graduate in December, but it will most likely be in May.

Full story coming.

Pac 12 is dead

Y'all, I'm just fascinated by all of this, have been for years now. And especially since it looks like UC will have four new conference mates now, with Arizona likely on board with Colorado and Arizona State and Utah to follow. Crazy how the Pac 12 is almost no more

Guys, I caught up with one of UC's recent visitors, who is also a recent offer, 2025 DE Cal Thrush. He visited last week for the Bearcats' elite camp/BBQ and was offered right after.

Thrush now has three offers: UC, Ball State and Kent State. But I'll be honest, he LOVES the Bearcats. I of course asked him about UC, but even when I didn't, he kept coming back to it. "I think right now Cincinnati definitely stands out," he told me. Interesting, his dad, Jack Thrush, went to Moeller High School and played at Ohio State as an offensive lineman from 1989-93. So there's ties to southwest Ohio for sure.

Cal told me it's all been sudden with UC. He got a DM from assistant coach Walter Stewart a few days before the camp asking him to come. It was on the visit that Thrush said he watched player-led drills, talked with Stewart and coach Scott Satterfield and was offered by Stewart before he left. Thrush said he really likes Stewart and kept mentioning his energy as a big reason why. He also loves the layout of campus, where Nippert Stadium is located and the new practice facility being built.

Thrush told me the only other schools he's shown some interest in are Wisconsin and Northwestern, but the latter, who knows with all the changes there this summer. Thrush did visit Wisconsin twice earlier this year. No visits set, but he told me he wants to get back to UC and Wisconsin. So we'll see when he visits, likely sometime in September. Iowa State and West Virginia also thrown out as possibilities.

UC is in the driver's seat here, but a long way to go. Still, this one will likely stay a heavy Bearcats lean barring something big down the pike.

Football Fletcher Named to Ray Guy List

Award for the top punters in college football:

Mason Fletcher was named on Wednesday to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Ray Guy Award, which is given to the nation’s top collegiate punter in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Fletcher was one of three finalists for the 2022 Ray Guy Award following a standout sophomore campaign in which he ranked fourth in the nation with a 46.2 average and booted 14 punts of 50 yards or more to go along with 29 punts downed inside the 20. His long punt of 84 yards at SMU shattered the Cincinnati and American Athletic Conference records. He garnered Associated Press Third Team All-America and All-AAC First Team accolades and was honored with the 2022 AAC Special Teams Player of the Year Award.

The Melbourne, Australia native collected preseason All-Big 12 accolades earlier this summer. He will be among the favorites for the 2023 Ray Guy honor.

Fletcher is one of 50 punters on the preseason watch list. The final list of candidates will be released on Nov. 6th. In mid-November, the Ray Guy Award committee will meet to select the 10 semifinalists, who will be announced on Nov. 10. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists to be announced on Nov. 22. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation’s top punter. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards airing on ESPN in December 2023.

About the Ray Guy Award
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
