Football Pre-season Poll Thoughts?

Hey y'all, I know it was released last week, but any thoughts on UC's pick to finish 13th out of 14 teams in the Big 12 this season? I'll start. I think UC gets 6 wins this season. Yes, there will be struggles, but I just don't see 13th as the right spot. I also don't think Texas will win the conference. The Longhorns always get the top recruits in-state, are picked high and then never materialize. Not sure why this season would be different. I can see 10-2 there, maybe 9-3, but I'm not fully sold on Quinn Ewers.
1. Texas (41), 886
2. Kansas State (14), 858
3. Oklahoma (4), 758
4. Texas Tech (4), 729
5. TCU (3), 727
6. Baylor, 572
7. Oklahoma State (1), 470
8. UCF, 463
9. Kansas, 461
10. Iowa State, 334
11. BYU, 318
12. Houston, 215

Football Jowon Briggs Nomination

Release from UC is below. First of a ton of pre-season awards that we'll start seeing over the next month and a half or so, leading up to the season:

The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced that fifth-year senior defensive end Jowon Briggs has been nominated for the 2023 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Tuesday.

Established by the College Football Association in 1992, Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. To be considered for a nomination, a student-athlete must be actively involved with a charitable or service organization and maintain strong academic standing.

Briggs was one of 136 student-athletes nationally to earn the nomination due to his community service, academics, and impact on and off the field. The initial list will be cut to the final 23-member AFCA Good Works Team that is selected by a voting panel of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists. After the team is announced in September, fans can vote for this year's Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain through the official page on ESPN.com/allstate. Fans can join the conversation on social media with #GoodWorksTeam throughout the season.

The Cincinnati native regularly volunteers his time with a number of local organizations, Matthew 25 Ministries and Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Libraries. He is involved with Lighthouse Youth Services, which provides health services and relief housing for local youth and families. Briggs also serves as vice president of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, where he helps coordinate philanthropic efforts and community service initiatives.

A member of the 2022 AAC All-Academic Team, Briggs earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and music focus and is set to graduate with a second bachelor’s degree in software development in December. He is also an accomplished musician and devoted husband to Nyjae Briggs and father to two kids, Jowon and Reine.

Briggs started all 13 games at nose tackle, anchoring a defense that that ranked fifth nationally in with only 4.61 yards per play allowed and finishing with 61 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks to earn All-AAC First Team honors in 2022. Briggs was named to an Athlon Sports Preseason All-Big 12 Third Team selection this offseason and enters the season as the program’s most experienced returner with 17 career starts over the last two seasons after initially starting his career at Virginia from 2019-20.

Hoops Recruiting Dewayne Brown Update

He got a little overshadowed when his Florida Rebels took on SFG, coached by Lebron James, but wanted to provide an update on Brown. He says he'll visit UC sometime in the coming weeks, so we'll see of and when that happens. Only others mentioned were Tennessee and LSU:

***Commitment*** Marquaze Parker to UC

Guys, I apologize for not getting this story up sooner. I'm out on vacation at the beach and didn't think Parker was ready to commit this soon. Thought he'd go into the fall. UC thinks it really got a steal here. He didn't get offers from Arkansas or Mississippi State after their camps, but had a big performance at UC and got an offer. This is the perfect scenario for the Bearcats, who have seen how good he is in-person, before others see him and offer. I do think he'll still get some AAC/Sun Belt offers, maybe SEC depending on space left, so this one might not be over. But good timing here.

FB Recruiting ***INsider: Samaj Jones***

Guys, he hinted at a decision coming yesterday and just a few minutes ago, three-star QB Samaj Jones announced on social media that he'll announce at 7 pm ET tonight. My sources tell me unless something changes, UC will be the pick. So I've put UC as my FutureCast pick here. Jones has by far been the biggest target on the board for UC for months. When I've asked just about every commit who they're working on most, they all tell me Jones. So they've all worked him extremely hard. And it sounds like it'll pay off. Updates here if and when available.

Hoops Miller Adds Roles

Today marks the day teams can add two assists. Miller knew this with recent two hires, but today, they’re officially assistants. Release from UC:

Cincinnati head men's basketball coach Wes Miller has announced the restructuring of the program's coaching staff ahead of the 2023-24 season, his third at UC.

The NCAA Division I Council, in January, elected to allow five countable on-court assistant coaches each in men's and women's basketball, made official on July 1, while maintaining the limit of three for off-campus recruiting.

"I'm very excited to announce our coaching staff for the upcoming season," Miller said. "I believe our staff puts us in a great position going forward, addressing many strengths and points of emphasis. We are very pleased with the new rules that allow our program, as well as all others nationwide, to best develop players and maximize their potential. We are going to finish this summer strong and hit the ground running again in the fall for our first Big 12 season."

Associate head coach Chad Dollar and assistant Andre Morgan return for their third seasons, while Drew Adams (previously Associate Athletics Director of Men's Basketball) joins Morgan as assistant coaches and recruiting coordinators. Josh Loeffler, hired in June after five years as Johns Hopkins' head coach, is now an assistant coach and Chief of Administrative Staff, while Jake Thelentransitions to Director of Player Development in addition to assistant coach duties following two years as the Director of Basketball Operations.

Matt Miller, also in his third year, earned the promotion to Director of Operations. Graduate assistants Abdul Ado and Malik Massey, who played for Wes Miller at Cincinnati and UNC Greensboro, respectively, return for their second seasons as well.

Additionally, the staff has added Griffin Preussas an assistant director of creative services (graphic design), as well as Omari Prince as a graduate assistant video coordinator. Preuss graduated from UC in May, while Prince attended Cal State Fullerton.

Guys, I caught up with another visitor last week, Lakota West (OH) 2026 defensive lineman Cam Thomas. He camped at UC last week, along with some of his teammates, including Grant Beerman, but no offer yet.
Thomas does have seven total offers-- Georgia Tech, Charlotte, Marshall, Miami (OH), Akron, UMASS and Eastern Kentucky. He told me he's gotten pretty close with assistant coach Kerry Coombs, who is also good friends with Thomas' head coach, Tom Bolden. Thomas said he has a lot of respect for Coombs, as he's "a legend" and he's comfortable talking to him. Overall, Thomas said he's very hopeful of a Bearcats offer. "They’ve got that facility coming in, a new partnership with Nike, the Big 12, so I have a lot more interest now," he told me.

Thomas has already been to Notre Dame and Ohio State for camps this month and he told me the one visit he has set is to Michigan in late July for a barbecue. I think it's one of those where the higher priority guys are invited. UC should also have one, though I haven't heard many details to this point.

I do expect Thomas back at UC soon, though it might not come until the season starts. Bearcats in a good spot, but we'll see how he develops and when (I don't think it's a matter of if) UC offers.

Full story coming.

Hoops Recruiting ***INsider: Dewayne Brown***

Hey guys, got another 2025 basketball target I just caught up with, four-star center Dewayne Brown. He's up to 10 offers right now, notably from LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
Login to view embedded media Brown wasn't much for words when we talked. I think he honestly just hasn't gotten into his recruitment much, that it's been his coaches kinda organizing things right now. The main thing he kept telling me was that it's all about relationships with the coaches, if he feels like he can trust them or not. I think he's had a bad experience at some point. Sounds like it, anyway and I don't know specifics.

With UC, Brown said assistant coach Chad Dollar is who he's talked to a few times and who made the offer. He didn't have a ton to say about Dollar, only that "I think he's a cool guy" and they've talked on occasion the past few weeks. Brown really didn't have much to say about UC overall, but it sounds like his relationship with Dollar at least has him wanting to see the Bearcats in-person at the end of the AAU season here in about a month or so.

Brown said he doesn't have dates, but the only two schools he knows he's going to are LSU and Tennessee. He honestly had next to nothing to say about the Tigers, but with UT, he said he's known assistant coach Gregg Polinsky for a while now. Oddly, though, the Vols have not offered, despite this. So might be a slow play or might be waiting until he actually visits. I'm not sure where he fits on their board.

Again, it's mighty early here, but UC is staying in touch, establishing an early bond with Dollar, which is a good thing.

Full story coming.

Hoops Recruiting ***INsider: Alier Maluk***

Please do not copy/paste or summarize any portion of this post to other Web sites or message boards, as it is a direct violation of copyright laws and could result in the termination of your Rivals.com subscription per our terms of service. Thank you.

Guys, I talked with one of UC's top targets in the 2025 class, center Alier Maluk. The Bearcats just offered him two weeks ago and he told me he now has 12 offers total, after Maryland and Vanderbilt offered last week.
Maluk said he had a good showing he felt like at the Pangos All-American camp, then coach Wes Miller saw him more in-person two weeks ago. Let's just say right now, he's interested. Maluk didn't have a ton to say about UC, other than, "They’re headed to a good conference, but I haven’t looked too much yet. I do wanna learn more about the school soon." But he told me he did like talking to Miller and that he hopes to visit UC after the summer circuit winds down, so late next month and into August.

The only other two schools Aluk talked about were Oregon and Florida State. Those were two, along with UC, that Maluk wants to visit coming up. He mentioned coach Dana Altman at Oregon specifically, but no one specifically at FSU. Maluk said he simply likes how they develop big men and the history the Noles have of getting guys to the NBA.

Very early here, but it'll be interesting to see if anyone else comes in, the next few weeks and where Maluk does end up visiting late summer. Full story coming.

Football UC Recognizes Transfers

Guys, this is old news, somewhat, as we've noted all these transfers previously, when they announced they would transfer to the Bearcats. But UC has now cleared and announced all of them. Below is the official press release:

Highlighted by three standout wide receivers, Cincinnati football announced the additions of eight transfers on Tuesday.

Head coach Scott Satterfield and his staff recently welcomed receivers Xzavier Henderson (Florida), Braden Smith (Louisville) and Aaron Turner (UConn) to the program in addition to offensive lineman Deondre Buford (Kentucky), defensive lineman Jalen Hunt (Michigan State), defensive end Kyree Moyston (Virginia Tech), linebacker Dion Hunter (New Mexico) and defensive back George Udo (BYU).

Henderson and Turner led their previous teams in receptions last season and will team with Smith to bolster a pass-catching corps that returned only one letterwinner from the 2022 squad.

Cincinnati also previously announced the additions of wide receivers Dee Wiggins (Louisville), Donovan Ollie (Washington State) and Sterling Berkhalter (North Carolina AT&T).

“I’m excited to officially welcome our newest Bearcats to the University of Cincinnati and our football program,” Satterfield said. “This group of talented young men will make us better right away. They bring much-needed experience to the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, and will elevate many of our position rooms, especially our receivers group. The start of camp and Higher Ground is right around the corner and we can’t wait to get started preparing for Eastern Kentucky and playing inside Nippert Stadium.”

Led by Satterfield and returning third-team Associated Press All-Americans defensive lineman Dontay Corleone and punter Mason Fletcher, Cincinnati football is preparing for one of the most exciting seasons in school history this fall. The Bearcats enter the Big 12 on July 1 and host seven games at Nippert Stadium.

Cincinnati opens the season on Sept. 2 when it hosts Eastern Kentucky at 3:30 p.m. (Big 12 Now on ESPN+).

Hoops Nolley Signs with Pelicans

Went undrafted last night, but Landers Nolley has signed with the Pelicans.

Release from UC:

Cincinnati graduate and former men's basketball standout Landers Nolley II signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the New Orleans Pelicans early Friday morning.

An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, minimum-salary NBA deal that allows the franchise to convert the contract to a two-way contract if that change is made before the start of the regular season.

Nolley, an Atlanta native, was a First-Team All-AAC selection in his lone season at UC, averaging 16.8 ppg (eighth in the league), the most by a Bearcat since Jarron Cumberland in 2018-19, and he was the team's second-leading rebounder at 5.8 per game.

He posted career-best numbers in those two categories, as well as minutes (32.1), field-goal percentage (44.7), three-point shooting (41.7), assists (94), steals (36) and blocks (17). All of them were strong improvements from his 2021-22 season at Memphis as well.

That 41.7 percent deep-shooting led the AAC, was 12th nationally and was UC's best on 60-plus makes since Justin Jenifer in 2018-19. His 96 treys ranked fourth all-time, the most since Deonta Vaughn in 2007-08.
